Prof.Gautam Chattopadhyay graduated from Medical College Calcutta (1981) and worked as House Surgeon in the Department of Surgery. He obtained his Master of Surgery (M.S) degree from the University of Calcutta (1985). He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (F.R.C.S) of Edinburgh UK. He was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship in 1989 for post-doctorate research and training in GI Surgery and he worked as a Registrar and Research fellow in the Dept. of Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Birmingham (1989-1991). He has also worked as a Specialist registrar in GI Surgery at Sand well Health trust in Birmingham (1998) Prof Chattopadhyay has presented his research work to the British Society of Gastroenterology (Southampton 1990) and to the Surgical Research Society UK (London 1991). His work was awarded a top-scoring paper title by the Surgical Research Society. Prof. Chattopadhyay has published his research papers in Digestive Surgery, European Journal of Gastroenterology, Gut, and British J. of Surgery during his tenure in the UK. On coming back to India he joined as a Consultant Surgeon and Lecturer of Surgical Gastroenterology at Medical College Calcutta. He established the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology for the first time in Eastern India. Prof Chattopadhyay became the first Professor and Head of the Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology in 2008. In 2014 he was appointed Prof. and HOD in the Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology in IPGMER Kolkata (PG hospital). In 2016 he was again appointed Professor and HOD in the Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology at Medical College Calcutta. He retired from Medical College in the year 2020. Prof. Gautam Chattopadhyay started his M.Ch course in Surgical Gastroenterology at IPGMER and SSKM Hospital Kolkata for the first time in 2016. Prof. Chattopadhyay retired from Medical College in the year 2020. Prof Chattopadhyay has presented his research works to the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Association of Surgeons of India, and Association of Surgical gastroenterology and he has to his credit a good number of publications in various National and International journals.
