Dr. Ambrish Mithal currently serves as the Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Max Healthcare (Pan Max), which comprises a network of 18 hospitals. Dr. Mithal was the first individual to obtain a DM in Endocrinology from AIIMS New Delhi in 1987. Following this, he joined the faculty at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow, where he played a crucial role in establishing the department and the DM training program. During the 1990s, he received the Fogarty Fellowship from Harvard Medical School and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Fellowship, which facilitated the creation of India’s inaugural osteoporosis program and bone density measurement system at SGPGI. In 1998, he transitioned to Apollo Hospital in Delhi, where he worked as a Senior Consultant until 2009. He then assumed the role of Chairman of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Medanta, a position he maintained until his move to Max. At all three institutions, he was responsible for establishing the DNB training program in Endocrinology. Throughout his career, Dr. Mithal has received numerous accolades. Notable among these are the Padma Bhushan (2015) and the B C Roy Award (2015). In 2021, he became the first Indian to be honored with the Laureate Award for international excellence by the Endocrine Society (US). He was also the first Indian recipient of the Boy Frame Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research in 2004 and was awarded a fellowship from the same society in 2021. Additionally, Dr. Mithal has been recognized with the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF)–Amgen Health Professionals Award (2013), the IOF President’s Award (2016), and the World India Diabetes Foundation (WIDF) Outstanding Achievement Award (2021). In 2013, he received the Springer Citation Prize for his paper titled “Global Vitamin D Status.” Dr. Mithal is a member of the Board and Committee of Scientific Advisors for the IOF and is also part of the WHO Bone Health Expert Group (BOHEG). He has served as the Past President of the Endocrine Society of India and is the founder of the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR).
