In this 21st century if you look around, everywhere in the real and virtual world (world of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) people are trying various ways to educate society regarding mental health and its importance and thus trying to destigmatise it. Society is gradually coming out of the taboo by talking and spreading awareness about mental health. Even we find our celebrities are also stressing upon mental health discussions which act as a positive boost for our society at large.

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT

Just like our physical health, good mental health is a must for all individuals to have a healthy happy life. But it is said that often we neglect our mental health and try not to acknowledge small problems in our everyday life which slowly and gradually pushes us towards anxiety, chronic depression or even a breakdown.

Small day to day changes, lifestyle modification and of course acknowledging the fact that mentally you are not feeling well is a great step towards achieving good mental health.

LETS TALK ABOUT HOW TO ACHIEVE IT…..

SLEEP

This one thing is a must for your physical and mental wellbeing. A good 8hrs uninterrupted sleep cycle will keep you lively, boost your memory, give you energy for the whole day and keep dark circles and love handles at the bay.

2. TAKE A MENTAL DAY OFF

You know when you need it. If a day off literally gives you energy and rejuvenate your mental peace then you should just take it. Trust me you will be more productive after taking leave so just go for it.

3. MORE TIME FOR YOUR HOBBY

In today’s Netflix, amazon prime, Facebook, instant life we somehow stopped living our regular healthy day to day life. Come out of binge-watching movies and web series and do give time developing your other likings like reading novels, singing, painting, cooking or anything which you used to like before virtual world era or just simply talk to your family and friends. Find things that you love to do and doesn’t keep you awake till 2 am.

4. STRETCH AND MEDITATE

Take out 5 min time every day from your schedule and stretch from head to toe or do mild exercise or just meditate. Exercise releases endorphins from your brain which keep you happy all day and overcome the stress if any. Meditation calms you down, if you don’t know how to do it just close your eyes and breathe in and out…work done!!

5. HEALTHY DIET

Stop binging on high carb and sugary food. Limit your junk and fried food to once or twice a month. Cut down alcohol and smoking, instead develop healthy home-cooked food eating habits, more fruits and veggies, proteins and vitamins.

6. TAKE A VACATION

Going on a vacation for a few days or a week is often more refreshing. A change of environment and a break from daily routine life gives you time to think about yourself, refreshes your mind and provides you time to think and plan in your life.

7. TELL YOURSELF ONE POSITIVE WORD EVERY DAY

Love yourself and tell yourself something positive every day. Try to help others. Do pamper yourself often.

8. TALK TO SOMEONE

If you feel low or confused or face any mood change especially if it is affecting your day to day life talk to someone…it can be your parents, friends or if needed reach out for professional help. There is no harm to consult a psychiatrist in Kolkata if you feel low mentally(we do consult a doc when we have fever or cough… it’s all the same) Just talk!!! Simply venting out what’s inside you at times solve most of your illness and improves your mental well-being.

Just keep in mind that recognising our problems, acknowledging them and reaching out for professional help if needed can only boost our mental health. So let’s pledge today to remove the taboo, discuss MENTAL HEALTH and its wellbeing and educate people so that we move to a better tomorrow where society accepts mental health problems seriously and
