Cardiac arrhythmia is a disorder in which the heart beats irregularly and sometimes uncoordinated. It can also beat too slowly (bradycardia) or too fast (tachycardia). An arrhythmia (or irregular heartbeat) can be due to a problem with the heart’s electrical system. It can also be a temporary problem or a serious chronic condition.

Types of Arrhythmias:

Arrhythmia is a term that encompasses a number of different heart rhythm disorders. Roughly divided into:

Tachycardia: In tachycardia, your heart is beating at a rate of at least 100 beats per minute (bpm). It is a life-threatening condition and medical attention should be sought immediately, advises India’s leading electrophysiologist. The most common causes of tachycardia are coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure, high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart muscle), cancer, heart valve disease, or infection.

Bradycardia: This is a condition in which the heart rate is abnormally slow, usually less than 60 beats per minute, according to a leading cardiologist in Delhi. Bradycardia is a term that describes a slow heartbeat. This condition is not usually life-threatening unless accompanied by other symptoms. Risk groups for bradycardia include people with diabetes, people who have recently had surgery, people with heart failure, and people with a history of abnormal heart rhythms.

Symptoms of Arrhythmia:

Listed below are the main symptoms of arrhythmia:

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Feeling lightheaded or dizziness
  • Heart palpitations (feeling of fluttering or skipped heartbeats)
  • Weakness, fatigue, or fainting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating
  • Blurry vision
  • Pounding in your chest
  • A racing or slow heartbeat

If you notice any of these arrhythmia symptoms, call a doctor immediately.
