To answer this question, we need to know why varicose veins occur. Veins are blood vessels that take the used blood (deoxygenated blood) from the tissues back to the heart. In the legs, there are countless veins, both deep veins and superficial veins. Varicose veins are a disease of the superficial veins. There are two main systems of superficial veins in the legs. The Great Saphenous vein in the thigh and leg, and the Short Saphenous Vein in the calf. Of course, there are many branches of these two vein systems. Now, all these veins have several one-way valves in them. These one-way valves ensure that the blood goes upwards toward the heart, against the force of gravity. If any of these valves are weak, either from birth or later due to the aging process of the body, the veins will be unable to return the blood upwards towards the heart.

The blood starts flowing back towards the legs when the patient stands up or sits up. This leads to increased pressure in the veins, leading to their enlargement and dilatation. These enlarged veins are called varicose veins. The treatment of leaking varicose veins is nowadays performed by various non-surgical treatment procedures, such as laser, RFA, Sclerotherapy, Glue, etc. Through these treatments, we close the leaking veins. However, it is possible that the patient has other vein valves which are weak but have not yet started leaking. Over a period, these valves will become weaker, and the leakage of blood in those veins will again lead to the development of Varicose Veins in another area of the leg. So yes, varicose veins can redevelop. However, in most patients, these are newer veins that have become varicose. Whilst it is difficult to predict the exact number, approximately 5 to 15% of patients will develop never varicose veins in their lifetime. Therefore, it is important that patients take care of their weight, eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, avoid lifting heavyweight, and control their thyroid disease, even after treatment.

In a small number of patients, the originally closed vein may re-open. However, this is very rare. It is therefore important that you have your varicose veins accurately mapped before the procedure by ultrasound, and treated by a doctor who is very well experienced in this treatment procedure, and the equipment which is used is the best available. At Doctor House Cardiovascular Centre, our doctors have performed many thousands of procedures. If fact, this is the largest individual volume center in the entire country. We have access to the latest state-of-the-art equipment and perform our procedures at very well-equipped centers.

In summary, therefore, the advanced laser and other treatment procedures massively reduce the chances of varicose veins coming back but cannot guarantee a permanent cure. In medical terms, the varicose vein is a chronic ailment and varicose veins may redevelop in the future for patients who were successfully treated in the past. Unfortunately, if you are one of those patients who comes back with new veins, you can still get them eliminated by the painless endovenous laser treatment.

Accurate diagnosis and proper treatment of varicose veins can ensure that most of them do not return. As the symptoms are unacceptable or unbearable for may people, even if the results of the treatment are not all time permanent, it is still preferable to no treatment at all.
