The best treatment for endometriosis depends on your symptoms and whether you want to become pregnant.
Hormonal contraceptives — including birth control pills, patches, and vaginal rings — also can help regulate your period, reduce blood loss and ease the pain. However, endometriosis can lead to infertility. If you’re having trouble getting pregnant, talk with your doctor about other treatments that might help.
If you want to get pregnant, you might need a surgical procedure called laparoscopy. During this procedure, the doctor removes growths of endometrial tissue from the outside of the uterus.
For some women with severe pain from endometriosis and no interest in fertility, hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries may be an option. This removes the source of estrogen and stops the menstrual cycle but requires careful consideration because it’s major surgery with risks and no guarantees that pain won’t return.
