As the temperature rises during the summer months, it’s important to take extra care of your kidneys. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste and excess fluids from your body, and dehydration and heat-related illnesses can put added strain on these vital organs. As a nephrologist, I want to provide you with some tips on how to take care of your kidneys during the summer season.

Stay hydrated: This is one of the most important things you can do to keep your kidneys healthy during the summer months. Drinking enough water helps flush out toxins and prevent dehydration, which can lead to kidney problems. Aim to drink at least eight to ten glasses of water a day, and try to carry a water bottle with you when you’re out and about.

Limit your salt intake: Consuming too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for kidney disease. During the summer months, when we tend to consume more processed foods and eat out more often, it’s especially important to be mindful of your salt intake. Try to limit your salt intake to less than 2,300 milligrams per day.

Eat a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet is essential for maintaining good kidney health. Choose foods that are rich in nutrients and low in sodium, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid processed foods, sugary drinks, and high-fat foods, which can put added stress on your kidneys.

Protect your kidneys from the sun: Sun exposure can increase your risk of kidney damage, especially if you’re taking certain medications or have a preexisting kidney condition. To protect your kidneys from the sun, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 when you’re outside.

Stay cool: During the summer months, it’s important to avoid overheating, which can put added stress on your kidneys. Stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible, and avoid spending too much time in the sun during the hottest parts of the day.

If you’re experiencing any symptoms of kidney problems, such as changes in urination or swelling in your legs and feet, it’s important to seek medical attention right away. As a nephrologist, I recommend seeing a kidney doctor or nephrologist in your area for an evaluation. If you’re in Kolkata, you can search for the best nephrologist or kidney doctor in Kolkata online or ask for recommendations from your primary care physician. By taking these steps to care for your kidneys during the summer months, you can help ensure that they stay healthy and function properly.
