There are two most common types of joint replacement surgery which are total knee replacement surgery in Mumbai and total hip replacement surgery, but replacement surgeries for other joints including ankle replacement and shoulder replacement surgeries are also possible. Modern joint replacement surgery involves the removal of the worn cartilage from both sides of the joint, followed by resurfacing of the joint with metal or plastic implants. Joint replacement surgery is typically recommended for patients with advanced end-stage joint disease who have tried non-surgical treatments but still experienced functional decline and disabled pain. Joint replacement surgery is an extremely effective surgery when done at the right time and indication.

Factors that are considered before opting for joint replacement surgery.

According to the orthopedic surgeon in Mumbai, age is not the only factor that is considered before going for joint replacement surgery. There are various other factors that are observed, those are listed below.

HEALTH: The current health status of the patient is the most important factor. The patient should go through various blood tests and imaging scans before going for joint replacement surgery. The past history of the patient is also seen by the surgeon to look for any condition that might affect the surgery.

PHYSICAL STRENGTH: The patient should be physically strong to go through the joint replacement surgery as the recovery time may vary from patient to patient. This also helps in choosing the mobility device that may be used during the recovery time of the patient.

COGNITIVE ABILITY: This is done to know whether the patient is mentally fit to go through the surgery. And if the patient has the energy and power to go through the recovery time after the replacement surgery.

DEGREE OF OSTEOPOROSIS: The surgeon will categorize the patient as fit or not fit for the joint replacement surgery on the basis of the degree of osteoporosis that the patient has.

OBESITY: The patient mustn’t be obese before the joint replacement surgery as it might lead to complications post-surgery.

AGE: Most patient that goes through joint replacement surgery falls in the age group of 50-80. Patients that are young in age may be excluded from the joint replacement surgery as their bodies have to keep these joints for the rest of their lives. And in the case of older patients, joint replacement surgery is not considered because the patient might not be able to go through the recovery routine that might include some physical exercises.

Things you need to consider:

If you are considered fit for the joint replacement surgery and your surgeon has given you their consent for the surgery, you must ask yourself a number of things before being operated on. They are:

  • Is the joint problem affected your quality of life?
  • Does the pain interrupt your daily life activities?
  • Are you willing to stop smoking and drinking (if you are a smoker or a drinker)?
  • Are you able to lose weight and exercise after surgery?
  • Do you have someone to take care of you after the surgery?

If your answer is yes to all the above questions you are ready to go for joint replacement surgery. If the answer is no then you need to consider other ways or need think about the things that should be done for improved life and a painless body.
