Obesity is a medical condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation of fat in the body. A person is said to be obese when his/her body weight is 20% more or even higher than the ideal body weight. Obesity is measured by a numeric value called BMI (Body Mass Index) which is calculated from the height and weight of the concerned person. BMI between 19 to 25 is considered fairly good. People who have a BMI above 25 but below 30 are considered overweight whereas patients with BMI greater than 30 are known to be suffering from obesity.

Obesity is usually caused due to a sedentary lifestyle that is symbolized by increased food intake and poor physical activity levels. A few patients who have a slow metabolism may experience weight gain even after limited food intake. Certain medications, medical disorders, and even genetics are some known factors that can lead to an increase in body weight. Obesity is a rising epidemic in India. The exceptionally high amounts of body fat tend to have a negative impact on the overall health and well-being of the patient. Obesity contributes to the likelihood of medical disorders such as Type II diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and even cancer.
