Usually, ultrasonography is the initial test for diagnosing kidney tumors. But USG scan cannot confirm the nature of a kidney tumor (benign or malignant), so for confirmation and staging purposes, a contrast CT scan of the abdomen is required for kidney tumor diagnosis.
