Acne appears when a pore in our skin gets blocked. Bacteria that lives on our skin get inside the blocked pore. The pore becomes red, swollen as a result acne appears.
Acne is caused by the action of androgens (male hormones) on sebaceous glands. These hormones are present in females as well as males. Under the action of these androgens, the sebaceous glands make more oil. The cells lining the ducts of these glands also change in character and become sticky, thereby blocking the opening of the follicle. In addition, there is multiplication of P. acnes bacteria and production of irritating substances, resulting in inflammation.
