Urinary Retention

About- Urinary retention which may be acute or chronic is an inability to completely empty the bladder.

Symptoms-

 Frequent urination  
 Urinary incontinence 
 Weak and inconsistent urine stream
 Mild discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the pelvis/lower abdomen
 Strong urge to urinate again right after finish urinating 

Causes-

 Obstruction of the urethra due to urinary tract stones, urethral stricture
 Mass or cancer in the pelvis or intestine
 Blood clot from bleeding in the bladder
 Foreign object in the urethra
 Urethritis
 Neurological problems including stroke, brain or spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease etc
 Delivering a baby
 Prolonged diabetes
 Weakened bladder muscles due to surgery, especially joint replacement or spinal surgery
 Side effect of some medications
