Oftentimes depression may cause the addiction or it may be the result of the addiction. Ideally you should seek treatment for the addiction and then we can discover if your are depressed apart from the addiction. The combination of drinking and smoking is very harmful, especially for your liver. It increases your chances of developing cirrhosis of the liver. This combination will also harm your libido over a period of time and you will lose your erectile capacity. Of the two smoking is more harmful because the effects are gradual and will not be revealed to you until it becomes too bad. I have given advice earlier to some people and I recommend that you read and follow them meticulously.

Sometimes these addictive habits mask an underlying problem which may make you susceptible to become enslaved to the habit. Work with a counselor to identify that and deal with those issues to completely and successfully come off the addictions. Depending on how much you drink and how long you have been drinking, you may need to go for detoxification. This may be done either in a hospital or in a rehabilitation center itself. It is a way of clearing all the toxins related to the alcohol and this will make it easy for you to remove the physical craving. It will also help to deal with the withdrawal syndrome when abstaining from alcohol consumption. You will need the help of a therapist and a support group called the AA, Alcoholics Anonymous. They follow a very effective and time-tested 12 Step program for the recovery. You will need to avoid all associations to drinking: friends, places, habits, companions, and times, for a short period until you get over the addictive drive. You may take liquid substitutes when the drinking urge is strongest as an oral stimulant. Examples of these would be: soups, buttermilk, juices, pepper water, tender coconut water etc. Start a completely new set of habits, behaviors, social circles, entertainment sources, and learn to be happy without the drink. There is a concept called Script Work, which is where the success of your recovery can have a lasting and effective impact. You must make some plans around salary time, and how to save money, and clear debts that you might have accumulated when you were drinking. Ideally, you should admit yourself to the rehabilitation center where all these things and more are done and practiced.
